The Westonka Speech Team competes in the 2AA Section of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) for a chance to advance to the AA State Tournament each year. The team also competes in the Wright County Conference (WCC) tournament each year. As a member of the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA), we compete in Minnesota’s Southern District for a chance to advance to NSDA’s National tournament. The team is comprised of students at both Grandview (7th grade) and Mound Westonka High School (8-12th grade).
The Westonka Speech Booster Club (WSBC) supports the Westonka Speech Team financially, materially, and voluntarily. Through booster fees and other fundraising efforts, the club helps fund additional coaching contracts; offsets the cost of home tournaments; provides meals and snacks for students; maintains this website; organizes volunteers and judges; and helps in many other ways to support the growth and education of the team.
We will be hosting several informational Zoom calls in October, after MEA break. These informational calls will cover all the details about the upcoming season, and allow you to ask questions in a small group directly to coaches. Please respond to this form to receive an invitation.
Registration for the 2020-21 season is now open! For full details (including information about our fees), please go to our Fees & Costs page.
Returners may declare their category/ies, or elect to join new students at one of two Placement Workshops: 11/2, or 11/5. All students must fill out the Category Placement form. Parents should help students with this form, as it asks them the times and days they would normally be available to practice. Coaches use all of this information, along with the Placement Workshop, to place students in categories and set up recurring weekly practices.
